Kashmir's 'first panchayat polls'? So tweets Omar

Jammu, Feb 9 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday cleared the way for holding three-tier panchayat polls in the state after a gap of nine years. They are likely to be held from March, sources in the cabinet said.The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting here chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who later relayed the news through micro-blogging site Twitter. “Cabinet clears Panchayat elections for 3 tier Panchayat structure in the state,” he tweeted.

Sources in the cabinet said the three-tier elections - at the village, sarpanch and district level - were likely to be held from March.

The last panchayat elections were held in 2002 and then too it had come after a gap of 20 years.
