Sanya (China), April 14 (IANS) India and South Africa will hold joint naval exercises soon but the dates are yet to be finalised, a senior official said Thursday after a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Jacob Zuma here.
The two leaders discussed bilateral trade and defence ties and a ‘gamut of issues’ that include the turmoil in Libya, Secretary, (economic relations) in the external affairs ministry Manbeer Singh told reporters here.
Manmohan Singh and Zuma met for about 45-minutes on the sidelines of the 3rd BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) summit here.
Manbeer Singh said the two leaders deliberated on ‘defence cooperation between the two sides’ and were of the view that the ties could be ‘made profitable by strengthening them’.
In this context, he said, it was decided to hold ‘joint naval exercise between the South African and Indian navies’.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the progress made in trade ties and noted that the two countries were poised to achieve the target of $12 billion by next year. ‘It was now revised to $15 billion,’ said the official.
